“Beyond the Book” Book Club: They Called Us Enemy by George Takei (Online Event)

We will stretch our reading skills this month by trying a new genre – graphic novels – with They Called Us Enemy by George Takei.  This selection was a New York Times bestseller, and winner of the 2020 Asian/Pacific American Award for Young Adult Literature.  It is available to borrow digitally with your Marion County Public Library Card and the Hoopla or Libby apps.

A stunning graphic memoir recounting actor/author/activist George Takei’s childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II…They Called Us Enemy is Takei’s firsthand account of those years behind barbed wire, the joys and terrors of growing up under legalized racism, his mother’s hard choices, his father’s faith in democracy, and the way those experiences planted the seeds for his astonishing future. What does it mean to be American? Who gets to decide? When the world is against you, what can one person do? (from the publisher)

The virtual event is open to all library patrons via Webex, a user-friendly conferencing platform. Participants can choose to connect online for both audio and visual or just by phone (audio only), depending on your comfort level and internet availability.
